VoIP and SIP Troubleshooting – Hands-On Training

This workshop is aimed at technicians who are beginning to work with troubleshooting in the Voice-over-IP environment or who would like to deepen their knowledge. Many problems and errors that arise in connection with Voice-over-IP can be resolved by checking configurations, log files, and traces. You gain detailed insights by examining the actual communication between the devices involved. A network analysis—where sent and received packets are captured—is an excellent tool for finding out where something is going wrong. The best‑known tool for network analysis is the open‑source application Wireshark, which is explained and used in this workshop at a fundamental level. This training focuses on getting to know the individual configuration options of Wireshark on the one hand, and explaining the protocols and configurations used in Voice-over-IP solutions on the other. The most important VoIP protocols currently are SIP for signaling and RTP for payload. In addition, there are further protocols and technologies in IP networks—such as TCP, UDP, DNS, DHCP, QoS, NAT, and others—that can play a role in VoIP and whose understanding is essential for comprehending VoIP. With this approach, technicians are provided with the necessary knowledge to correctly configure the PBX for VoIP (IP phones and SIP carriers), as well as to use tools like Wireshark and Message Doctor effectively in the Voice-over-IP environment. The practical exercises are carried out on a telephone system using prepared traces.

    Requirements

    • Basic knowledge of IP and telephony.

    what will you get?

    1. You will know the most important VoIP components and protocols in the IP network. You can optimally configure Wireshark for troubleshooting in a VoIP environment. You will understand VoIP mechanisms such as codecs, QoS, jitter, and NAT using the example of an OpenScape 4000.
